Probation FAQ

What happens if I fail a course while on probation?

One of the Conditions of Probation is that you cannot fail a course. If you do fail a course, you will be asked to withdraw at that end of the session. For a list of the Conditions of Probation, please refer to information on Academic Probation.

What happens if I choose to take time off?

Taking a break from your degree and returning when you feel more equipped to take on the workload is always an option. When you return, you will be on probation for the first 12 months (or at least until you have completed 3.0 courses).

What happens after meeting the Conditions of Probation?

You will be in good standing and eligible to enroll in a regular course load as long as your cumulative average at the end of each session is at least 60%. (Note: In some cases that means earning higher grades in the next session to ensure your cumulative average is sufficient.)

Is there anything I can do to prepare for my Academic Counselling Consultation?

Before you talk to the counsellor, it is important to think about why you had trouble meeting the minimum progression requirements in the last year. Identify the challenges, and consider what you may do differently to address them moving forward. Note where you have had success academically. What was it about those courses that helped you perform better? Consider you academic goals, and what resources may help you raise your average.

As you prepare your probation plan and course selection, remember to fill out a checklist for your program/module. If you see that you are missing any first year requirements, this is an excellent opportunity to incorporate them into your plan.

You can refer to our Program Planning pages for more information.

What if my grades were low due to medical or personal issues?

If your challenges are related to medical or personal reasons, there may be other options available to you. Our academic counsellors will be able to help you review the situation and advise you on your options. Be aware that documentation is always required under these circumstances. If you would like further information, please contact us through the Help Portal under the Dean's Waiver/Probation section.
