COURSE OVERLOADS

FALL/WINTER

The normal full time course load is 5.0 courses, balanced over the two terms so that you are attending no more than 5.0 full or half courses at a time. The Academic Counselling Office may give you special permission for an overload (5.5 or 6.0 courses) if you have a strong academic record.

Non-Honors students must have a term average of 70% in 5.0 courses. Honors and MOS students must have a term average of 75% in 5.0 courses.

If you are not eligible for an overload in first term, you may qualify for one in second term if you can show us in December that your term grades are in the 75% range.  Please consult the Academic Counselling Office for more information.

Extra courses may only be added during extended web registration or during the paper form add/drop periods.  During on-line registration, submit the form below to request special permission to overload.  During the paper form add/drop periods, add the extra course and get permission from the Academic Counselling Office when you submit the paper form, provided you meet the above average requirements.

SUMMER
You may take a maximum of 3.0 courses in the summer if the following conditions are met:

  1. No more than 2.0 courses may be taken simultaneously
  2. If 2.0 courses are taken simultaneously, only 1.0 course may be an honors or laboratory/tutorial course, and only 1.0 may be taken by distance studies

Special permissions can be considered for summer overloads if you have an outstanding record. But, we recommend caution. The courses are already condensed. One Summer Evening course should keep you busy if you are working.

COURSES AT THE AFFILIATED UNIVERSITY COLLEGES (Brescia, Huron, King's)

Social Science students are expected to take their principal courses at Main Campus.  Courses offered at Main Campus should be given priority when planning your academic timetable.

On occasion, students may take a maximum of 1.0 course at an Affiliate as follows:

  1. If the course is not offered on campus, no special permission is required, unless indicated in the course notes in the Undergraduate Timetable:

    • "Main campus students require home faculty permission” indicates that you must receive special permission from the Social Science Academic Counselling Office before being allowed to enroll in the Affiliate course.
    • "Restricted to students registered at an affiliated college” indicates that this course is closed to Main Campus students, but permission to enroll can be requested from the Academic Counselling Office during the paper form add/drop period in September and January.
Please note: Special Permission requests to override course restrictions are generally not considered until September.
    Check course notes here:

    http://www.registrar.uwo.ca/Infocontents/Timetables.cfm

  2. If the course is offered on campus but is full or conflicts with your timetable, you may request Special Permission to enroll during the paper form add/drop periods in September and January. All efforts should be made to accommodate the Main Campus sections of courses offered.  The Affiliate may ask to see your special permission form before adding you to the class.  Remember, in most cases you may take a maximum of 1.0 course at an Affiliate.

Students who are taking 2.0 or more courses may take 1.0 course at an Affiliate if that course is not offered on campus. For example, Religious Studies and Social Work are offered only at the Affiliates. To add one of these courses, register on-line if possible or take your Add/Drop form to the department at the Affiliate. Then turn your form in to the Academic Counsellors in Social Science. Special permission is not required for a maximum of one course that is not offered on campus. Please note: different rules apply if you are registered in a module not offered on Main Campus.  Consult the Social Science Academic Counselling Office for more information.

PREREQUISITES WAIVER

To take a course without the prerequisites, you must obtain permission from the department offering the course and the Academic Counselling Office. Permissions are granted only in exceptional circumstances and may not be used as the basis for an appeal.

Please note that it is to your advantage to consult the relevant Departments before June 1st so that special permissions can be recorded on your record by the time on-line course registration begins.

For Faculty and Staff ONLY:

Special permissions may be issued by the Academic Counsellors on behalf of the Dean. In some cases a recommendation is required from the department concerned.
