Coming back in September?

You must submit an Intent to Register!!

Make sure you submit your ITR form indicating the program that you plan to take next year otherwise you won't be able to register for courses!!

What if I change my mind after I submitted?

You will be able to submit or revise your ITR until March 31.

What if I don't submit my ITR?

You will not be able to use the online registration system to reserve space in your courses during the summer.

How do I know whether I am eligible for the program selected?

Check your grade report in May on Student Center.

Do I select my courses now?

You must select your program now and select your courses in the summer.

What are the essential modules for the new 3 year or 4 year degrees?
What are the rules for combining modules?

Generally, module combinations other than those outlined in the “Approved Module Combinations for Degrees” have not been approved and, consequently, may not be taken.

What is an antirequisite?

Courses that overlap too much to allow credit for both.

Do you have at least one course from each Category?
Have you completed the requirements for first year?
 
  • 5.0 courses including one from either category B or C

Can you take senior courses if you fail a first year course?

You can take senior courses only if you are replacing the first year course at the same time.

Can you repeat a course?

Yes, both marks are on your record but only the second mark counts.

What is the maximum number of first year courses allowed?

7.0

What are the minimum requirements for admission to honors?

Complete first year (5.0 courses); B average in required courses; no mark less than 60%.

What are designated essay courses? Do they have to be taken at Western?

E or F/G are designated essay courses that have to be taken at Western.

How many courses can you take in the same subject?

No more than 2.0 in your first year. For a 3 year degree, no more than 9; for a 4 year degree, no more than 14 (with the exception of Psychology).

How many courses can you take in each term?

5.0 courses per term.

How many courses do you have to take to be eligible for a scholarship or the Dean's Honor List?

Full-time students who have completed 4.0 courses with an 80% average are on the Dean's Honor List.  Full-time students with an 80% average on 5.0 courses may be considered for scholarships.

How many courses can you take at the Affiliated Colleges?

Only 1.0 per year and only if the course is not offered on main campus.

What do I need to pass?

All grades below 50% are considered failed grades.  To remain in goodstanding at Western you need a 55% average in first year and 60% in second year. You need higher marks for some programs.

How will I know if I am eligible for the program I select at Intent to Register?

Log on to Student contents and select My Past in May.

How do I figure out the new course numbering system?

The new 4 digit numbering system will start this May for all courses at Western. 

0001 - 0999*   Pre-University level introductory courses
1000 - 1999     Year 1 undergraduate courses
2000 - 4999     Senior-level undergraduate courses
 

* These courses are equivalent to pre-university introductory courses and may be counted for credit in the student's record, unless these courses were taken in a preliminary year.

Why would someone have to use the paper form for ITR?

If you are in one of these categories, you would have to complete a paper form ITR:

  • Students requesting the new Honors Specialization programs in MOS.
  • Second degree students
  • First year students continuing in first year
  • New cross disciplinary students
  • Reregistrants
  • New concurrent students
  • New Scholar's Electives and Western Scholar's

Departmental Counselling

Departments will hold counselling sessions to discuss their programs and answer common questions. They may also provide counselling guides or information pamphlets.

Academic Counselling  (2105 and 2114 SSC)

The Social Science Academic Counsellors will be available to answer questions. We ask that you review the relevant sections of the Calendar and attend the general information sessions to prepare in advance.

Sarah Dawson, our Career Counsellor is available in room 2040, SSC and will also provide assistance during drop in hours.

Students in Scholar’s Electives and Concurrent Degree Programs should consult with Gail Wright in the Dean’s Office, Room 9438, SSC.

Please read your calendar carefully and seek advice when necessary. It is your responsibility to choose courses that will fulfill the graduation requirements.
